Fun Fact: A "necklace of lights" encircles Lake Merritt. Featuring 126 lampposts and 3,400 "pearly bulbs", the necklace was first lit in 1925. In 1941, the lights were removed to comply with World War II blackout conditions. After a decade-long campaign, the lights were again illuminated in 1985. Visit The Terrace Room tonight! We have a great view of the "necklace of lights."

The Chocolate Decadence Cake (Gluten-Free) Yields: One 10" Round Cake Ingredients: - 1/2 cup Water - 3/4 cup Sugar - 1/2 lbs. Bittersweet Chocolate - 1 cup Salted Butter - 6 Eggs - 10" Round of Parchment Paper Directions: 1) Melt chocolate in a double broiler. 2) Combine the water and sugar; boil mixture until clear 3) Pour the hot syrup into the chocolate and beat until the mixture comes together. 4) Whisk the butter into the hot chocolate mixture. 5) Beat the eggs well (don't over aerate the eggs) and fold into the chocolate mixture. 6) Spray parchment paper with non-stick spray. 7) Place pan in water bath in a 350 degree oven for approximately 40 minutes. The cake is done when the surface looks dull and is firm when you press lightly in the center. Make sure to let it stand at room temperature until cool, then refrigerate. The cake will firm up when chilled. Run a sharp knife around the edge of the cake and place on a serving dish, then flip over. Top with berries or chocolate sauce and enjoy!

Ok, so our number is 7 so here are 7 random things you might not know about the Terrace Room and The Lake Merritt Hotel. 1. The Lake Merritt Hotel has it's own "day" Former Mayor Jerry Brown proclaimed September 21 "Lake Merritt Hotel Day" in 2000. 2. The SF Gate wrote an article about the Lake Merritt Hotel being a "Welcoming place for gay retirement" in 2007. 3. The Hotel used to have a "men only" bar separate from the dining room. It is now our Conference Room, but the entrance to the Cathay Bar can still be seen from the outside. 4. Lunch was advertised as $.60 during the Depression Era for an entree, salad, and dessert. "Meeting the trend of the times." 5. During the 30's, a typical dinner menu consisted of: canape anchovies, roast stuffed chicken, pan gravy, and cranberry jelly. 6. The Tribune used to broadcast live from the dining room. 7. Those big archways leading into the dining room, used to be french doors and windows that let to an outdoor terrace, thus the name The Terrace Room. *Picture is of theCathay Bar. The Lake Merritt Hotel was built in 1927. In 1934, luxurious hotel dining was added to The Lake Merritt Hotel. Known as the Cascade Terrace in the early days, the restaurant and night club came to prominence when what was once an outdoor terrace was enclosed. Diners comfortably enjoyed overlooking the lake with a spectacular view. The Terrace Room soon became the City’s hot night spot, complete with an in-house band. Attracting big name stars and dance orchestras, Oakland music fans could listen to a live radio program that was broadcast each evening from The Cascade Terrace by the Tribune radio station, KLX. The restaurant’s beautiful dining room also hosted innumerable weddings, post-WWII dances and the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club’s first meetings. Acclaimed artist Andre Boratko painted a stunning interior mural depicting scenes of Lake Merritt in 1956.
